5 Tips for Navigating Turbulent Times

STRESSFUL TIMES CAN SOMETIMES BE OPPORTUNITIES TO LOOK DEEPER.

During these unprecedented times, many of us fall into the trap of focusing on what’s not working, instead of what is working. More often than not, we find respite from a slew of quick tips for staying positive, quickly shifting us from despair to happiness. The problem with this tactic, however, is that we often fall into a false sense of joy — a manic facade that is temporary. This is not true joy. True joy is achieved only after wading through the muck. While it’s important to think about what we do have that is good or positive, sometimes it’s also beneficial to reflect on what isn’t working or what feels uncomfortable in our lives in order for us to grow. To help with this process, I’ve put together tips for reflecting on the messiness and embrace the struggle.

  1. Take a walk in nature (backyard, forest, park, beach). On the walk, notice the sounds you hear. Notice the colors you see. Notice the smells.

  2. Find a comfortable stop to sit while outside. Allow your whole body and mind to fall into the messy, uncomfortable feelings you’ve been trying to get rid of. Welcome them into your experience.

  3. Breathe deeply: inhale through your nose for 7 seconds, exhale through your mouth for 7 seconds. Repeat.

  4. Scan your body and take notice of any discomfort you may be feeling. What, if anything, is coming up for you? If you brought a journal, perhaps you’d like to jot down any thoughts and feelings.

  5. Reflect on what isn’t working for you in your life in this moment. Unpack it. What isn’t working about it? Why isn’t it working? What might the meaning of this situation be for you and your life? What has this been situation been like for you? What has it been like for others to experience you? What might you be able to learn from this situation? What would you need to change this situation? What steps could you take to change this situation?
